How to Get to Cheow Lan Lake
Getting to Ratchaprapha Pier from Surat Thani, Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi & Khao Sok
FIRST, KNOW WHERE YOU NEED TO GO
Cheow Lan Lake and Khao Sok village are in the same national park area, but they are not the same destination.
Most Cheow Lan Lake tours and floating resort stays begin at Ratchaprapha Pier, near Ban Ta Khun. Khao Sok village and the national park headquarters are on the western side of the park, about an hour away by road.
If you are booking your own transport, always check the meeting point on your tour confirmation. For a lake trip, you will usually need to travel to Ratchaprapha Pier, not Khao Sok village.
QUICK TRAVEL GUIDE
Travel times are approximate and can vary with your exact pickup location, traffic and road conditions.

FROM SURAT THANI TO CHEOW LAN LAKE
Surat Thani is the easiest transport hub for reaching Cheow Lan Lake. Travelers may arrive by flight, train or bus, but each arrival point is in a different location, so it is important to know exactly where your transfer starts.
FROM SURAT THANI AIRPORT
Surat Thani Airport is one of the most convenient arrival points for Cheow Lan Lake, especially if you are flying from Bangkok.
A private road transfer from the airport to the Ratchaprapha Pier area normally takes around 1–1.5 hours, depending on traffic and the exact meeting point.
If you are staying overnight on the lake, check your required pier arrival time before booking a flight. Floating resorts and private tours do not all depart at the same time, and arriving too late may mean that you cannot reach your resort as planned.
Practical advice: For an overnight lake stay, an early or mid-morning arrival at Surat Thani Airport gives you more flexibility than an afternoon flight.
PRIVATE TRANSFER
Surat Thani Airport → Ratchaprapha Pier
Private vehicle from ฿1,800
This booking is for the road transfer only.

FROM SURAT THANI TOWN
Surat Thani town is farther east than the airport and railway station.
The road journey to Ratchaprapha Pier is typically around 1.5 hours. Public vans may be available toward the Ratchaprapha Dam area, but schedules and drop-off points can change. Thailand's tourism authority also describes road connections from Surat Thani town toward Ratchaprapha Dam at around this travel time.
For travelers with luggage, children, a fixed boat departure or a specific floating-resort check-in time, a pre-arranged transfer is usually simpler because it can take you directly to the correct pier.
IMPORTANT: YOUR BOAT DOES NOT LEAVE FROM SURAT THANI
Your road journey ends at Ratchaprapha Pier. From there, you continue into Cheow Lan Lake by longtail boat.
The boat journey to your floating resort is separate from the road transfer and may take roughly
35 minutes to more than an hour, depending on the resort's location.
PRIVATE TRANSFER
Surat Thani Towb→ Ratchaprapha Pier
Private vehicle from ฿2,200
This booking is for the road transfer only.
FROM SURAT THANI TRAIN STATION
Surat Thani Railway Station is actually located in Phun Phin, outside Surat Thani city.
From the station, allow roughly 1–1.5 hours by private vehicle to reach Ratchaprapha Pier, depending on road conditions.
Overnight trains from Bangkok are popular with travelers heading to Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake, but train arrival times can change. If your lake boat has a fixed departure time, leave a reasonable buffer between the scheduled train arrival and your pier check-in.
Practical advice: Do not arrange your boat departure too tightly around the published train arrival time.

FROM DON SAK PIER TO CHEOW LAN LAKE
Best for travelers arriving from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao
Don Sak is an important connection point between the Gulf islands and Cheow Lan Lake. If you are travelling from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao, you can arrive on the mainland and continue west by road toward Ratchaprapha Pier without travelling into Surat Thani town first.
This makes Don Sak → Cheow Lan Lake a practical route when combining the islands with an overnight stay on the lake.
From Don Sak to Ratchaprapha Pier
After arriving at Don Sak, continue by road directly to Ratchaprapha Pier.
Allow approximately 2–2.5 hours by private vehicle, depending on your ferry terminal, traffic and road conditions.
There is normally no reason to travel into Surat Thani town first if you have a private transfer waiting at the ferry terminal. Going directly from Don Sak toward Ban Ta Khun and Ratchaprapha Pier is the more practical route.
Coming from Koh Samui
Regular ferry services connect Koh Samui with Don Sak. For example, Seatran's current published service between Nathon and Don Sak takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
If you plan to enter Cheow Lan Lake on the same day, choose an early ferry from Samui and check your floating resort's boat departure or check-in time before booking.
Do not calculate the journey using ferry time alone. You also need time to disembark, collect luggage, meet your driver and travel from Don Sak to Ratchaprapha Pier.
Coming from Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan also has ferry connections toward the Surat Thani mainland via Don Sak. Journey times depend on the operator and service; car-ferry services can take around 2.5 hours between Koh Phangan and Don Sak.
For a same-day connection to a floating resort, an early departure from Koh Phangan is preferable.
If the ferry reaches Don Sak later in the day, staying one night near Ratchaprapha Pier before entering the lake the following morning may be a better plan than trying to make a late boat connection.
Coming from Koh Tao
Koh Tao requires more careful planning because the sea journey is longer and routes vary by operator.
Some services connect Koh Tao → Koh Phangan → Koh Samui → Don Sak. A current 2026 Boonsiri service, for example, leaves Koh Tao at 08:00 and reaches Don Sak at 11:40.
That does not mean every Koh Tao ferry follows this route or timetable. Ferry schedules change, so travelers should check the actual mainland arrival point before arranging the road transfer.
For Koh Tao in particular, avoid booking a floating-resort boat based only on the scheduled ferry arrival. Allow enough time for the ferry connection and onward road journey.
Check Which Don Sak Pier You Are Arriving At
This is important.
Don Sak is not one single ferry terminal. Different operators use different piers in the Don Sak area, including Seatran and Raja Ferry terminals, with other passenger services using their own departure and arrival points.
When arranging a private transfer, send your operator:
Ferry company • Ferry number/time • Departure island • Scheduled arrival time
rather than simply saying “Don Sak Pier.”
This helps the driver meet you at the correct terminal.
Same-Day Lake Arrival or Stay Near the Pier?
If your ferry reaches Don Sak early enough, it is possible to continue directly to Cheow Lan Lake.
But remember that reaching Ratchaprapha Pier is not the end of the journey. If you are staying at a floating resort, you still need to travel into the lake by longtail boat.
For guests arriving from the islands later in the day, a more comfortable plan can be:
Koh Samui / Koh Phangan / Koh Tao → Don Sak → hotel near Ratchaprapha Pier
then
Next morning → Cheow Lan Lake
This avoids building a tight ferry–road–boat connection where one delay affects the entire itinerary.
PRIVATE TRANSFER
Don Sak Pier → Ratchaprapha Pier
Private vehicle from ฿3,500
This booking is for the road transfer only.
ARRIVING AT RATCHAPRAPHA PIER — WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Reaching Ratchaprapha Pier is the end of the road journey, but it is not the end of your journey to Cheow Lan Lake.
If you are staying at a floating resort, you still need to check in, meet your guide or boat driver, organise your luggage and travel by longtail boat into the lake.
Allow enough time at the pier rather than planning to arrive exactly when your boat is due to leave.
1. Arrive at the Correct Pier
Most Cheow Lan Lake tours and floating-resort transfers use Ratchaprapha Municipal Pier, but always follow the meeting point provided with your booking.
Do not ask your driver simply to take you to “Cheow Lan Lake.” The reservoir covers a very large area, and Ratchaprapha Dam, the viewpoint and the boat pier are not the same stopping point.
If you are arranging your own transport, send the driver the exact meeting point supplied by your tour operator or floating resort.
2. Meet Your Guide or Resort Representative
The procedure varies depending on what you have booked.
For a private tour, your guide or representative will normally meet you around the pier before you board your longtail boat.
For a floating resort booking, some resorts have their own check-in procedure or representative at the pier and may operate boats according to scheduled departure times.
This is why the time shown as “check-in” on your booking may not be the same as the actual boat departure time.
Arrive during the check-in window given by your operator rather than assuming you can board whenever you arrive.
3. National Park Entrance Fees
Cheow Lan Lake lies within Khao Sok National Park, so national park entrance fees apply.
Whether these fees are already included depends on your tour or package.
If they are not included, your guide or operator will normally explain where and how they need to be paid before entering the lake.
Check your booking confirmation before travelling rather than assuming the park fee is included in the room rate of your floating resort.
4. What Should You Do with Your Luggage?
This depends on your itinerary.
If Cheow Lan Lake is part of a longer journey — for example:
Phuket → Cheow Lan Lake → Koh Samui
—you may be travelling with large suitcases.
Longtail boats can carry luggage, but for a 1- or 2-night floating-resort stay, taking only what you need in a smaller overnight bag is usually more convenient.
Before leaving your previous hotel, check whether your tour operator or resort provides luggage storage at or near the pier.
Do not leave valuables, passports, medication or essential travel documents in stored luggage.
5. Prepare for the Longtail Boat
The boats used to reach most floating resorts are traditional motorised longtail boats.
Your luggage travels with you, so items that should remain dry — particularly phones, cameras, passports and electronics — are best kept inside a waterproof bag or protective cover.
A light rain jacket can also be useful even outside the main rainy season.
Life jackets should be available on the boat and should be worn as instructed by your guide or boat operator.
6. How Long Is the Boat Journey?
This depends heavily on your floating resort.
The raft houses are spread across different parts of Cheow Lan Lake, so there is no single answer to “How long is the boat from Ratchaprapha Pier?”
For the resorts we cover, a useful planning guide is:
7. The Boat Journey Is Part of the Experience
Don't think of the boat ride simply as a transfer.
The journey from Ratchaprapha Pier takes you progressively farther from the developed area around the dam and into the limestone landscape of Cheow Lan Lake.
Depending on your route, your boat may pass Khao Sam Kloe (Three Brothers) or stop for sightseeing before continuing to the floating resort.
This is another reason not to compare floating resorts only by room type. A resort 35–40 minutes from the pier creates a different itinerary from one that requires more than an hour by boat.
8. What If You Arrive Late?
Contact your operator immediately.
Do not assume another boat will automatically be available.
Some private tours have more flexibility, but floating resorts may operate scheduled transfers. A late arrival can therefore affect the boat, guide, activities and sometimes whether reaching the resort that afternoon is practical at all.
If your journey involves a flight, train or ferry connection on the same day, build extra time into the schedule.
This is particularly important for:
Koh Tao → Don Sak → Cheow Lan Lake
Koh Phangan → Don Sak → Cheow Lan Lake
Late flights into Phuket or Surat Thani
The safest itinerary is not always the one with the shortest connection.
PRIVATE TRANSFER VS SHARED VAN VS PUBLIC TRANSPORT
There is no single best way to reach Cheow Lan Lake. The right option depends on where you are coming from, your budget, how much luggage you have and — most importantly — whether you need to catch a boat at a fixed time.
Private Transfer
For travelers entering Cheow Lan Lake on the same day, a private transfer is the most reliable option.
The vehicle collects you directly from your hotel, airport, railway station or ferry terminal and takes you to Ratchaprapha Pier without scheduled passenger stops.
This is particularly useful if you are:
-
Staying overnight at a floating resort
-
Travelling with children or several bags
-
Arriving from Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi or Don Sak
-
Connecting from a flight, train or ferry
-
Meeting a private boat or a resort boat at a specific time
A private transfer also makes point-to-point itineraries easier. For example, you can travel Khao Lak → Cheow Lan Lake, stay overnight, and continue Cheow Lan Lake → Don Sak after the tour instead of returning to Khao Lak.
Shared Van
A shared van can be a good lower-cost option when its schedule matches your lake itinerary.
The important question is not simply whether the van goes to “Khao Sok.” You need to confirm where it actually drops passengers.
Some services terminate around Khao Sok village or use stops along Highway 401. If your boat leaves from Ratchaprapha Pier, you may still need another local transfer.
Shared services also make multiple passenger pickups and drop-offs, so the journey can take longer than a direct private transfer.
Best for: Travelers with flexible schedules who do not have a tight boat connection.
Public Bus & Local Transport
Public transport is possible, particularly from Surat Thani, but it requires more planning.
Services, departure points and final drop-off locations can change. Some routes may only take you to Ban Ta Khun or the Highway 401 area, leaving a final local journey to Ratchaprapha Pier.
Public transport therefore works better when you have plenty of time or are staying near the lake before your tour.
We would not build a tight flight → public bus → lake boat or ferry → public bus → lake boat connection unless you have confirmed each part of the journey.
Taxi & Ride-Hailing Apps
A taxi may be practical from some nearby locations, particularly Surat Thani.
Ride-hailing availability becomes less predictable around rural areas and for longer interprovincial journeys. More importantly, finding a vehicle after returning from the lake may not be as easy as finding one in a city or airport.
If you need onward transport after your lake stay, arrange it before entering the lake rather than relying on finding a car at the pier at the last minute.
Which Option Should You Choose?
For a day tour with flexible timing, several transport options can work.
For a 2D1N or 3D2N floating-resort stay with a scheduled boat, we recommend choosing transport based on reliability rather than simply the lowest fare.
The critical connection is the boat. A road transfer that arrives late can affect the entire first day of your lake itinerary.
Simple rule:
If you have a fixed boat departure, use transport that gets you directly to Ratchaprapha Pier with a comfortable time buffer.
