Physical Characteristics:


Size: Approximately 3-4 cm in length.

Coloration: The body is green with white spots, while the wings feature a complex pattern of red, yellow, and black.

Distinctive Feature: The most fascinating feature is its elongated snout, resembling a lantern, which often leads people to mistakenly believe that this insect can emit light.

Habitat: Pyrops candelaria is found in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It thrives in tropical and subtropical forests, particularly in the forests of Khao Sok National Park.


Behavior:


Feeding: This insect feeds on tree sap by using its long snout to pierce the bark and extract nutrients.

Life Cycle: Its life cycle consists of egg, nymph (immature), and adult stages. The nymphs resemble adults but are wingless and often have different colors.

Sightings: During a full-day jungle trek in Khao Sok, this insect is commonly found on trees and is relatively easy to spot.

Cultural Significance: In some cultures, particularly in Thailand, Pyrops candelaria is admired for its unique appearance and is sometimes considered a symbol of good luck.


Conservation: Although not classified as endangered, habitat loss due to deforestation could potentially impact its populations.
