Oriental Bay Owl

belonging to the order Strigiformes, are fascinating nocturnal birds of prey found in various habitats, including the dense forests of Khao Sok National Park. Known for their distinctive round faces, large forward-facing eyes, and silent flight, owls are highly adapted to hunting in low-light conditions.

Their eyes are specially adapted for excellent night vision, while their asymmetrically placed ears allow them to pinpoint the location of sounds with remarkable accuracy.

In Khao Sok National Park, several species of owls can be found, each adapted to the diverse environments within the park. Some common species in the area include:

  1. Barn Owl (Tyto alba): Recognizable by its heart-shaped face and pale plumage, the barn owl is often found hunting over open fields and forest edges at night.

  2. Brown Wood Owl (Strix leptogrammica): This medium to large-sized owl has a brown, mottled appearance, blending well with the forest canopy. It is often heard before it is seen, with its deep, hooting call resonating through the forest at night.

  3. Buffy Fish Owl (Ketupa ketupu): Preferring habitats near water, the buffy fish owl is known for its diet that includes fish and other aquatic creatures. It has a distinctive appearance with ear tufts and a yellowish-brown body.

  4. Oriental Bay Owl (Phodilus badius): With a distinctive facial disc and a reddish-brown body, the oriental bay owl is a rare and elusive species in Khao Sok. It prefers dense forested areas and is known for its haunting call.

Owls in Khao Sok play a crucial role in controlling the population of small mammals, insects, and other prey animals, maintaining the balance within the ecosystem. Due to their nocturnal habits, owls are more often heard than seen. Their calls, ranging from hoots to screeches, are a common sound in the park after dark, adding to the mysterious and vibrant nocturnal environment of Khao Sok.

The dense forests, abundant prey, and variety of habitats in Khao Sok National Park make it an excellent place for owls to thrive. For birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, nighttime excursions in the park offer the best opportunity to encounter these majestic birds in their natural habitat.
